I picked a place and my iPhone's location didn't change
GPSLarp accepted the place. The phone still shows where you actually are — or one app on the phone shows the new place and another does not.
There are four links in this chain and they fail differently. Work out which one broke before changing anything, because the fix for a phone that stopped listening looks nothing like the fix for an app that never asked.
01The four links
- GPSLarp accepted the place. If it did not, it says so — "No device connected." when nothing is selected, "Location not found." when the search matched nothing. Neither of those is silent.
- The connection to the phone was still up when you confirmed. The override travels over a live connection. If the phone locked, slept, left the network or lost the cable in between, there was nothing at the far end.
- iOS accepted it. This is the link nobody can see from either side, and the one this page cannot make promises about.
- The app you are looking at re-read the system location. Many apps ask once and cache the answer. Some do not use the system location at all.
02Check each one
01Did GPSLarp actually apply it?
"No device connected." means no phone was selected — the location was never sent anywhere. Fix that first, on GPSLarp can't find my iPhone.
"Location not found." means the place name matched nothing. Try a more specific name, or drop a pin on the map, or paste a latitude and longitude directly.
If neither message appeared, GPSLarp believes it sent the coordinates and the break is further down.
02Is the phone still connected?
Unlock the phone, check it is still on the same Wi-Fi network or still plugged in, and have GPSLarp look for devices again. A device that has dropped out of the list since you set the location is the whole explanation.
This is the most common version of the problem on Wi-Fi, and it is invisible: nothing about the app's window changes when the phone wanders off.
03Is Developer Mode on, if the phone runs iOS 16 or later?
The services the override travels through are the ones iOS keeps behind that switch. GPSLarp does not check it and will not tell you it is off, so it has to be checked by hand: Developer Mode.
04Force-quit the app on the phone and open it again
Swipe up from the bottom of the phone's screen and hold to see the open apps, then swipe the one showing the wrong place away. Open it again.
This is worth doing before concluding anything, because an app that requested the location once and cached the answer will keep showing the old place indefinitely, no matter what the system now reports.
05Check with an app that came with the phone
Use one of the built-in apps that shows where you are — the one with the map, or the one with the compass, which prints coordinates. Those read the system location plainly and have no reason to do anything clever with it.
If the built-in app shows the new place and the app you care about does not, then the override reached the phone and the second app is not reading the system location. See below.
03When an app does not use the system location
Changing what iOS reports changes what iOS reports. It does not change anything an app works out for itself, and apps have several other ways to guess where you are:
- Your IP address. Anything that geolocates you server-side is reading the network you are on. GPSLarp is not a VPN and changes nothing about your IP address.
- The account, the SIM, the time zone, the billing address. Region is often taken from one of these rather than from GPS.
- A cached answer. Covered above, and it is the one that looks most like a failure and is not.
Which of these any particular app does is not something we can tell you. Nothing here has been tested against any specific app, and a page that listed which ones "work" would be inventing test results.
What this page will not claim
It will not tell you that working through the list above makes the location apply. Nobody here has demonstrated a location change end to end on hardware we can point at, and no iOS version has been tested against this product — so "do these five things and it works" would be a sentence written for its confidence rather than its truth.
What the list does is eliminate the links that are checkable, which is genuinely most of them. If you get to the end and the built-in app still shows your real position, the honest position is that the override is not reaching iOS on your phone, and nobody here can currently tell you why.
04The one about it snapping back
The most common complaint about location spoofing on iPhone, across every tool in this category, is that the position holds for a minute or two and then reverts on its own. If that is what you are seeing, you have found the category's oldest unsolved problem rather than a GPSLarp bug report.
There is no page here telling you how to stop it, and that is deliberate. Nobody has measured whether GPSLarp shares this behaviour — not on any iOS version, not over Wi-Fi, not over a cable. Two things could therefore be written today and neither would be honest: a page claiming immunity, and a page prescribing fixes for a defect whose presence here is unknown.
The one thing that is worth knowing, and is structural rather than measured: the override lasts only as long as GPSLarp is running and holding the connection. Quitting the app, sleeping the Mac, or letting the phone leave the network ends it by design, and that is not a fault. If the position reverts at the moment one of those happens, that is the mechanism working as intended — see putting the real location back, which is the same behaviour from the other side.
05If that did not work
Go back one link at a time rather than starting over. Reconnect the cable, confirm the phone is in the device list, set a place that is obviously far away — a different continent, so there is no chance of mistaking it for a real fix — and check with a built-in app before opening anything else.
If a free run of the mode you were using has already been spent, the app refuses rather than silently doing nothing; that refusal names itself and is not this problem. Every account gets one free run of each mode.
