How to change your iPhone's location from a Mac

This is the Mac route to changing the GPS position your iPhone reports. The software runs on the Mac, not on the phone: the Mac holds a connection to the iPhone over Apple's own device-development protocol — the same one Xcode and Apple Configurator use — and tells it which coordinates to report. Every app on the phone that reads the system location then reads the coordinates you picked.

There is no jailbreak in any of this, no modified iOS, and no configuration profile installed on the iPhone. What there is instead is a Mac that has to stay connected, one administrator prompt, and a phone that has to be trusted once. This guide covers each of those, what to do when the phone does not appear, and — the part most guides leave out — what this approach does not do.

01Why do it from a Mac at all

iOS has no public interface that lets an app on the phone change what the other apps on the phone read as its location. That is why the approaches on offer come down to three: jailbreaking, sideloading a modified build of one particular app, or driving the phone from a computer over the connection Apple's own developer tools use. Only the third leaves iOS as it shipped.

Doing it from a Mac buys three things, and costs one. It works across every app on the phone at once, because the value being changed is the system's rather than one app's. It needs nothing installed on the phone. And it is undone by stopping — there is nothing left behind to remove. The cost is that the Mac has to stay in the picture: close the connection and the phone goes back to its real GPS, which is a feature when you want it back and a limitation when you wanted to walk away.

02What you need before you start

Computer
Any Apple Silicon Mac — M1, M2, M3, or M4. Intel Macs are not supported.

Connected over Wi-Fi or USB, with a one-time permission grant.

Administrator access on your Mac — asked for once, to start the location connection.

None to download. The app opens your browser to sign in the first time you run it, and your free run of each mode is counted against that account.

Tens of megabytes — it bundles the iPhone-connection tooling it drives.

No iOS version is listed there, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. Nothing in this project pins or verifies one. The working condition is simply that the iPhone can be trusted from a Mac — the same prompt you would see plugging it into Xcode — so there is no compatibility list to check yourself against.

03Install the app

Download GPSLarp and open the installer. It is a signed, notarized macOS package that installs one thing, GPSLarp.app, into /Applications. The download itself asks for nothing — no account, no email address, no card.

The first time you open the app it opens your browser once so you can sign in, with an email address, Apple, Google or GitHub. That is what your free run of each mode is counted against, and it is also what later lets you export or delete everything held about you.

04Trust the iPhone from the Mac

Plug the iPhone into the Mac with a cable and unlock it. iOS asks whether to trust this computer; approve it. This is the same trust relationship Xcode and Apple Configurator use, and it is a one-time grant rather than something the app asks for each session.

Once that pairing exists, the cable becomes optional: a phone that has been plugged in and unlocked at least once keeps being reachable over Wi-Fi, as long as it is on the same network as the Mac. Doing the first connection over the cable is worth it anyway, because it settles the pairing and the network in one go.

05Start the connection

GPSLarp opens a connection to the phone before it can change anything, and starting it needs administrator rights on the Mac — you will get one macOS password prompt. This is asked once, it happens locally, and the password is not sent anywhere.

Nothing is detected until that prompt is approved. Dismiss it and the app says it could not start the connection — which is a different message from the one you get when the connection is up and no phone is behind it. Reading which of the two messages you have is the fastest way through when the iPhone does not appear, below.

06Pick a place and confirm

With the phone connected, search for a place by name, click the map, or tap one of your saved locations, then confirm. The new position applies straight away, and every app on the phone that asks the system where it is gets the coordinates you chose — maps, social apps, fitness apps, anything reading the same GPS value.

Raw coordinates work too, if you have a latitude and longitude rather than a place name. Anywhere you set can be kept as a saved location and re-applied later in one click.

07Move instead of teleporting

A fixed point is not always what you want, because a position that never changes is not what a real one looks like. GPSLarp has three ways to move the reported position instead of pinning it:

  • Walk — pick a start and a destination and it walks the real street route between them at walking pace, every turn, at human speed.
  • Drive — the same real routes at driving speed, with the route planner picking the streets and the timing following the road.
  • Joystick — nudge the position live with an on-screen pad, holding a direction to drift a few metres at a time.

All three hold the same connection open that a fixed position does, so the Mac has to stay running for the same reason.

08Put the real location back

Press Stop or Reset, or simply close GPSLarp. The iPhone falls straight back to its real GPS immediately — no reboot, no residue, no trace. The override only lasts as long as the app is open and holding the connection.

That is worth planning around rather than discovering. If you want the changed position to hold while you use the phone, leave the app running in the background on the Mac — with the cable in, or with both devices on the same network.

09When the iPhone does not appear

This is the failure people hit first, and it is almost always one of three things.

  1. The connection is not running on the Mac. That is the single administrator prompt from step 5; nothing is detected until it is approved.
  2. The phone has never been plugged in and unlocked, so the two are not paired to each other yet. Step 4.
  3. Over Wi-Fi, the phone is not on the same network as the Mac.

If it still does not appear, connect the cable and unlock the phone once. That covers the pairing and the network together, which is why it is the first thing to try rather than the last.

One thing this guide will not tell you

Which of the three it is. The app can tell a connection that failed to start from a connection that is up with no phone behind it, but for the second case it offers the remaining causes together rather than identifying one. Anything that claimed otherwise would be describing a diagnosis nobody has built.

10What this does not do

Guides in this category tend to stop at the happy path. These are the limits that decide whether the method is right for you, and they are here rather than in a footnote because discovering them after paying is what turns a customer into a complaint.

11What it costs

Every account gets one free run of each mode — one teleport, one walk, one drive, one joystick session — with no credit card, so you can see the method work on your own phone before paying for anything. Keeping it after that is a subscription rather than a one-off purchase.
